"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." - Romans 13:1

As we continue through the Book of Romans, we find as we get to Romans Chapter 13, Paul talking about subjectivity to the higher powers. Just as earlier in Chapter 6 Grace is not a license to sin, we find that Paul says "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers." Which is reasonable, yes? Wait...where have we heard that word before recently? Reasonable.....service? From Romans 12? Paul does build upon what he's writing. And it's making better and better sense with each passing chapter, as we easily see.

Paul says that there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Paul even goes on to state in verse 4 that these higher powers can be "a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."

A revenger to execute wrath? To quote the lost, unsaved, or confused; " my god would never punish anybody, or send anybody to hell. My god is a loving god who would never hurt anyone or judge anyone, or send anyone to hell." (Which...they're correct for their idolatrous god which springs from their imagination is no doubt exactly that) YET...God's word states that God establishes higher powers to be revengers to execute wrath. Upon evildoers no less.

We find one such example in the Book of Job. Job speaks regarding a parable in Chapter 29, and speaks of himself in a specific position, "breaking the jaws of the wicked" (There's a revenger executing wrath upon the wicked) and let's see what he says regarding himself:

"When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!

The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.

The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.

The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.

Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.

After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners." - Job 29:7-35

He was no doubt some kind of important figure; where "young men saw him and hid themselves, and he broke the jaws of the wicked". Which was the interest for going to Job Chapter 29...definition. Going there "for our learning" (Romans 15:4) so to better get a better grasp of Romans 13 and seeing an example of the higher powers, even one from a historical account so long ago.

Higher powers were there even then, they were there in Paul's lifetime, they're here in our lifetime, and Romans 13 is the place to go and obey the literal words of our bible for understanding and truth today regarding matters of higher powers in society today. Not only in society, but thrones, dominions, principalities and powers.
